In the history of Audio Physic, the Avanti loudspeaker model is an internationally-renowned classic. And the latest relaunch has been able to thoroughly convince the discerning ears of audiophiles and reviewers. The Codex goes a step further. Based on its larger volume and the consistently advanced Audio Physic technologies in the chassis and crossover design, the Codex draws on the companys full potential.

There is always a certain divergence between excellent music reproduction and interior design features. For a rich, deep bass and a solid foundation, loudspeakers require a certain cabinet volume. The Codex successfully manages this tight-rope act, thanks to its intelligent cabinet architecture and variety of available finishes. Despite its volume, the four-way loudspeaker with its clear contours and slender baffle exudes an air of stylish elegance. Especially the high-gloss glass finishes, combined with bright colour tones, almost lends the loudspeakers an appearance of weightlessness.

Special attention was paid to the inner structure of the corpus, as only an extremely sturdy cabinet offers the prerequisite for a reproduction that is pure and true to detail. Numerous braces and extremely stiff elements, made of open-cell ceramic foam, lend the Codex body superb stability, without noticeably reducing the interior volume. Thanks to the sandwich construction, featuring a permanently elastic intermediate layer, the cabinet is perfectly quiet. Thus, the acoustic impacts of the cabinet components themselves are effectively counteracted.

As with the Avanti, the subwoofer on the Codex is mounted in the interior of the cabinet, utilising an optimally matched chamber. The 10 long-throw chassis is extremely powerful and effortlessly transmits the lowest frequencies. From 100 Hertz on, it hands the baton over to a 7 chassis in the front of the cabinet. Heres the benefit of this division of labor: The bass reproduction remains confident and controlled in any situation. Whats more, the Codex offers considerably more latitude in terms of placement than traditionally designed loudspeakers, even close to a wall, they play with crisp structure and full torque.

The clarity in the lower octaves provides a cornerstone for exceptionally neutral and precise reproduction of mid and high frequencies. This is where the cutting-edge Hyper Holographic Cone Chassis, now in their third generation, come into play. The intelligent dual-basket construction of the chassis reduces any sound impacts due to micro-vibrations to a conceivable minimum, as the chassis does not have any direct contact with the baffle of the loudspeaker. That is why the sound reproduction is not affected by any renegade resonance, so-called partial vibrations. In addition, the chassis have their own compartment in the corpus of the Codex. This eliminates any interactions via the air volume in the loudspeaker. For maximum signal fidelity, the crossover network is distributed among several levels and equipped with first-rate components. The individual modules are placed next to each chassis.

The Codex also shows meticulous detail in its connection terminal. Here, the loudspeaker cables are connected with high-end WBT nextgen pole pieces. The terminal is also mechanically decoupled from the loudspeaker cabinet. It is the sum of all these details that makes the Codex a veritably mature loudspeaker true to the Audio Physic motto: No loss of fine detail.

With the Codex, Audio Physic masterfully shows how you can combine four paths, better: put them in one housing and combine them into a homogeneous transducer. This is achieved with numerous clever solutions, which often serve to avoid vibrations, reflections and resonances. These include the body in the sandwich structure, the insulation with ceramic foam, the ceramic coating of the aluminum membranes or the double basket construction for the midrange. This also includes unusual concepts such as the cone as the tweeter, the use of the interstices as bass reflex channels or the subwoofer that works inside the cabinet. It is the invisible fourth that provides the bass, while the three visible chassis on the front connect seamlessly and deliver a harmonious sound image up to 40 kilohertz. So the Codex plays powerfully, highly dynamic and with powerful bass, it creates an extraordinarily detailed and transparent, plastic, and spatial sound image in 3D. The playback remains natural, without oversubscriptions and free of compression effects, so that you can enjoy a wonderfully relaxed music experience with it. The optical grandezza comes to acoustic mastery: the Codex is a feast for the eyes and ears with its back-sloping housing and the wonderfully intensive veneer, but also with the alternative design in glass.

Superlative workmanship meets outstanding musicality and a neutral yet stirring character. Combined with its incomparable serenity, this makes the Codex an irresistible addictive drug.

The short, sparkling tones get lost in an indefinable space, while the rhythmic breathing in the intro of the song seems to come from next to me rather than from somewhere between the speakers. Breathtaking - and somewhat irritating. But as already mentioned, the Codex vehemently refuses to appear as a locatable sound source. If I were asked to describe this superb speaker with a single word, I would choose "musical". It's fascinating how outstandingly well these speakers are crafted, how they play absolutely linear and how they produce up deep, powerful and tight bass. But you will forget all that anyway the minute these speakers start playing and draw you into the centre of the music right away. And the Codex does that like no other speaker in its class.

In the course of their 35-year company history, they have written hifi history several times, thanks to their developers Joachim Gerhard, known in the scene as "the Magician", and their current chief developer Manfred Diestertich. From Avanti and Virgo, the first floor-standing loudspeakers on the market, to the Medea launched in 1991. A legend in the hifi scene. Frenetically celebrated by the trade press as a "resolution miracle" due to its touching reproduction of music, the post-modern-designed Medea was a worldwide reference loudspeaker for years. Always in search of even more music, in 1993 the Cardeas loudspeaker showed an unprecedented level of detail along with the entire frequency band. A new reference loudspeaker was born. Again from Audio Physic.

They are pioneers in the research and application of new materials and structures in loudspeaker development. And set market standards in the process. Always in search of an even more authentic sound, they do not leave any detail unnoticed. They were the first company to use ceramic foam and showed that glass is not a taboo material. While many manufacturers now rely on dome tweeters, they have been working on the further development of their aluminum cone tweeters for over 15 years. Their drivers are another important component for an emotional, dynamic, and undistorted listening experience. The largely self-developed chassis are unparalleled in the world of hifi.

Hand made in Germany

Their products are manufactured by hand in Brilon, Sauerland. This makes them one of the last loudspeaker manufacturers in Germany. Rooted in Brilon in the Sauerland region, many of their suppliers come from the surrounding area. Regionality and sustainability are part of their DNA.
