Majestic M-Ears
"Audiolab's new M-Ear in-ear headphones are something special"
~ Jon Myles / Hi-Fi World

The M-Ear 2D is a two-way, two-driver design, with one driver handling mid/high frequencies and the other dedicated to bass.

Collaborative to innovate
Audiolab is best known for its DACs (digital-to-analogue converters), CD players and amplifiers, so the development of in-ear monitors (IEMs) is something of a departure for the brand. To meet the challenge, Audiolab approached ACS a world-leader in the design and manufacture of in-ear monitors.

Founded more than 20 years ago by musician Andy Shiach, ACS has a huge reputation in the pro world that stretches across live music, broadcasting, motorsports and more. The companys custom-made in-ear comms and hearing protection equipment is used by a host of big names, from Little Mix to U2, The X Factor to Formula 1.

10 years ago, ACS extended its offering with a range of high-end in-ear monitors for consumers, garnering rave reviews across the board. The Audiolab M-EAR range represents the latest generation of ACSs class-leading technologies, developed in collaboration with Audiolabs design team to create universal-fit IEMs delivering true high-end performance at competitive price points.

A Feast for your ears
Both M-EAR models feature ACSs patent-pending IRIS (Intelligent Resonance In Silicone) technology, created to maximise the musical potential of balanced armature drivers. IRIS construction methods allow precise acoustic tuning, fusing the crisp, open detail that characterises high-performance balanced armature IEMs with a musical warmth and fluidity that other manufacturers fail to match. Additionally, the M-EAR 4D incorporates a ported balanced armature design for the bass drivers, with a cavity in the silicone that is precisely balanced to the driver this is unique to ACS.

Another ACS feature integrated in both M-EAR models is SSI (Sound Stage Imaging) a tuning technique derived from ACSs purpose-designed manifold technology. This widens the soundstage and creates more space around individual instruments and voices, enhancing sonic definition and the feeling of being present at a live musical performance.

The result, in the case of the M-EAR 2D, is a pair of discrete IEMs delivering taut, punchy bass, captivating midrange clarity and crisp, clean high-frequency detail, with no harmonic interference. Invest in the M-EAR 4D and the sonic return is even greater space, scale and dynamic expression.

An in-line microphone is included for hands-free convenience when making calls, but this is no ordinary miniature mic it is a Knowles SiSonic MEMS-based microphone, selected as a result of ACSs pro-audio experience for excellent wide-band voice reproduction in noisy environments.

To ensure a snug fit and superb noise isolation, the M-EARs come with six pairs of ear tips in three different sizes. Developed by ACS and made from memory foam, they slowly form to the shape of the ear canal to separate the listener from outside noise whilst providing excellent comfort. Thanks to the reduction in ambient noise, musical detail remains crystal clear even at lower volume levels.

The Audiolab is sufficiently sensitive, presenting no challenge whatsoever to drive for either of the headphone amps or sources. It's effective in noisier environments and delivers a consistently solid sonic performance. The efforts that have been undertaken to deliver a more spacious soundstage really pay dividends. The top is very well considered with guitars and Tapia's vocals sounding immediate and real. Lower frequencies feel detailed and agile. It does demonstrate excellent timing.

Detailed, spacious sound; comfort; build.

A talented in-ear headphone.

There's no end of in-ear headphones available nowadays but these new Audiolab offerings are amongst the best. The 2Ds are smooth and detailed with good bass presence.

About the brand

Formed in the early 1980s by Philip Swift and Derek Scotland, audiolab earned worldwide acclaim with the 8000A – an integrated stereo amplifier that became a classic ‘step-up’ from the budget models of the time.

During the ensuing years, the 8000A established itself as one of the most successful British amps ever produced, and was joined by a range of electronics including CD players, pre/power amps and an FM tuner. The brand switched hands in 1997, changing its name to TAG McLaren Audio; and it so was known until 2004 when audiolab became part of the International Audio Group and returned to its original name.

“If ever a product defined its market, the 8000A is the one. Reliability, ease of use, engineering excellence and a well-behaved sound are the pillars supporting the justified reputation of the 8000A. Over the years, audiolab’s no-nonsense, evolutionary approach to design has widely been recognised.”

In 2010 audiolab began the introduction of its latest full-width 8200 Series components, combining the company’s original ethos of simple, well-constructed ergonomics and crisp, transparent sound with innovative, performance-led design concepts.

In 2011, the arrival of the M-DAC heralded a new, compact range called LAB Series, further expanded by the Q-DAC and M-PWR. Since the launch of the 8200 Series and LAB Series, audiolab has won more major awards in UK hi-fi magazines than any other brand of high-performance audio electronics.

2015 sees the launch of audiolab‘s brand new 8300 Series. With a long working relationship with audiolab, world renowned audio designer Jan Ertner has headed up the design of the 8300 series and more…

Jan Ertner, Lead engineer audiolab electronics

“I have designed audio products for more than 25 years and still get excited about bringing new products to market. The joy of listening to music drives me and knowing that our customers will be able to enjoy it at its best is very satisfying. I believe in every product I design because I don’t stop working until I feel myself saying “I want one” , that is the moment when I know it’s right.”

2018 Saw the launch of the 6000 Series. The 6000A was the first in the series to be released recieving many significant awards from UK hi-fi magazines and online influencers, setting the presidence for the 6000CDT and 6000N Play.
